YUKO, the original Japanese Hair Straightener featured on Oprah and in just about every fashion and beauty magazine, is also known as thermal reconditioning. Widely recognized around the world, YUKO continues to be the leading brand in hair straightening that gives you low-maintenance, hassle-free straight hair with the natural shine and silkiness restored. You'll see it in the quality of the results!
At Stella Luca Salons Winter Park, you will find 2 of the first 3 Yuko certified stylists in Florida. Joy and Nicole were both trained at the Yuko center in Beverly Hills in 2003. Since then, they've performed over nine hundred Yuko services for clients in Orlando and from as far away as Spain, Dubai, Italy, & Kuwait.
Make no mistake, this is NOT a technique that can be "picked up" by watching a video. The Yuko intensive training course is 2 weeks long. There is a lot to know about this system and much of it can be perfected only through experience. Our stylists have more experience with Yuko than the stylists at any other salon in Florida. Based on that experience, and because we are in constant contact with Yuko regarding their latest advancements, Stella Luca was recently selected as a Florida training center for Yuko.
Upon consultation, our well-trained stylists can answer all of your questions and review the procedure with you. Below you will find some answers to the most frequently asked questions along with some further information on Yuko permanent Japanese hair straightening.

Yuko Japanese Straightening Frequently Asked Questions
The Product
How does Yuko work?
This system uses the latest heat technology that works on the protein bond of your hair. Yuko reconstructs the protein bond and reshapes the hair to make it lie flat. It rebuilds the hair from the inside and completely alters the structure of your hair. The hair is then sealed in this shape so that, when you re-wash it, it will dry straight.
Your Hair
Do I need a consultation?
Yes, a consultation is required to decide if this service is right for you and to answer your questions. During the consultation, your stylist will analyze your hair and make sure all of your questions are answered.
Can I get it done if I don't live in Orlando?
Yes, many of our clients travel to Orlando for this service. We can arrange to provide a pre-consultation over the phone and through e-mail. We can also assist with travel arrangements at no additional charge. If you plan on spending time in Orlando after your service, just keep in mind there are some aftercare considerations discussed below.
Is Japanese straightening suitable for me?
Japanese straightening is perfect for most people. However, there could be factors, such as unsuitable current hair condition, hair loss, or damage from bleach that could prevent Japanese straightening from being an option. If you have had any relaxers containing sodium hydroxide or lye, Yuko does not recommend getting your hair straightened with Yuko except on new growth hair. In our experience, we've found that people of strong Middle Eastern descent typically have hair that is more resistant to this procedure. The treatment will work, though often to a slightly lesser extent. In each case, we will discuss a realistic expectation up front.
How long does my hair need to be?
Your hair should be at least 5-6 inches long before it can be considered for a Japanese straightener.
The Results
How easy will my hair be to handle after having this process done?
After having the process done all you will need to do when you wash your hair is a quick blow dry style; that's pretty much it! You will spend less than half of the time you normally spend in your quest to achieve straight hair. Once dry, you are ready to face the Orlando humidity and, if you do get caught in some rain, you won't end up with frizz.
How often does the treatment need to be applied?
Even though Yuko is a permanent straightening system it will still need to be re-done to treat new hair growth. With this in mind it is generally advised that you receive the treatment about every six to twelve months with the average client retreating in eight months.
Will this damage my hair?
NO! Like any sophisticated tool, it needs to be used in the hands of someone with experience and training. Other companies have developed Japanese straighteners to compete with Yuko. Some require little or no training to purchase. There will always be people, in every industry, who take short-cuts. As a result, you will sometimes hear that this service is not effective or that it may be damaging. Our stylists have invested an enormous amount of time and have had extensive training to assure you will end up with beautiful healthy frizz-free hair.
The Service
How long will it take?
An accurate answer to this question depends on certain factors, which include how long/thick your hair is and how curly/unruly it is. The more length it has and the more curly/unruly will mean that the treatment will take longer. On average it takes around four to five hours to complete. Having 2 certified stylists on staff, we are able to schedule appointments where both stylists work on your hair at the same time. The per hour cost for this service will be higher with 2 stylists but the time spent in the chair will be reduced significantly.
How much does it cost?
Cost depends mainly on the type, length and condition of your hair. Japanese straightening is priced on a per-hour basis and it starts at $850. This will be discussed fully during your consultation.
Aftercare
What aftercare is involved with this straightening process?
The main aftercare is the fact that you can't wash or get your hair wet for 2 days after having the treatment applied. We also advise against exercise and other activity that may cause your scalp to sweat. It is further required that you don't tie your locks back or put anything in them, which includes products. After this you are able to treat your hair like normal.
Can I treat my hair the same as before?
It will be easier to care for your hair after a Yuko straightener. You will spend less time getting ready and will achieve a better, frizz-free result that will last throughout the day. The correct brushes, cleansing and styling products will be recommended. It is important to follow the recommendations made by your stylist to get the most out of the application. This will be explained during your consultation.
Can I swim in a pool and go to the beach?
Swim, dance, play tennis, ski. After your initial 2 day waiting period, it's all fine so long as you use the proper hair care products and methods to keep your hair clean and healthy. Your stylist will discuss this during your consultation.
Can I have my hair colored after a Japanese straightener?
Yes, an initial waiting period of 2 weeks is recommended but, after that, a professional colorist will have no problem maintaining your hair color.
Yuko Japanese Straightening or a Keratin Treatment - Which One is Right for Me?
Both products work well to provide their intended result. Both treatments need to be done at the hands of a skilled stylist. But which one is right for ME? That really depends on the result you want. We've given you a quick comparison below to help you select. If you are still unsure after you read through, Stella Luca stylists have been working with these products for a long time and they can review the benefits and limitations of each. Either way, rest assured that our stylists have more combined experience than any other salon in Winter Park or Orlando when it comes to hair straightening.
Keratin Treatment:
PROS: It will fade away gradually, meaning that it will eventually leave you with your original natural hair once more. There is no new growth to retouch or growing out stage if you decide not to maintain the look. It takes less salon time and generally costs less than the Yuko system. It leaves the hair with more body than the Yuko (because it does not remove all of the curl) and it can be used on dyed, bleached, heavily highlighted hair. It's perfect for the client who is mainly looking to add shine, fight frizz, and tame overly curly hair. Hair can be worn straight or with curls. It eliminates 95% of frizz while it maintains a smooth yet silky feel.
CONS: It's temporary. The effect doesn't last as long as Yuko, about two to four months. It will not perfectly straighten the hair. Keratin usually removes 50% of the curl in your hair. Depending on how curly your hair is to begin with, you may still have to flat iron or use a blow dryer to straighten out the remainder of the waves or curls.
Yuko Japanese Straightening:
PROS: It lasts forever, meaning you won't see any curl or frizz until new hair grows in. Yuko will deliver beautiful, shiny, smooth, frizz-free board-straight hair as it improves the overall health of your locks. Removing almost 100% of the curl from your hair, Yuko can provide much more dramatic results. Clients who have had a lifelong hatred for their unruly, curly hair have literaly cried with joy after they saw the end result. Although you will see regrowth in 5 to 6 months, you will appreciate only having to manage the new growth during your morning routine. The treated section of your hair will remain smooth.
CONS: It is permanent. As new hair grows in, your new growth will look as it did before your Yuko. To manage this, you will need to have your hair redone in about 6 to 12 months or you will need to flat iron your roots. Alternately, you could reverse the Yuko and add curl back to the treated section.
So which one is better, Yuko or Keratin? It really depends on the result you desire and your lifestyle. If you still have questions regarding either Yuko Japanese straighteners or Brazilian Keratin treatments, just call to schedule a consultation with one of the stylists at either of our Stella Luca Salons in Winter Park.
